Like the Youtube description; Music done in caustic sequencer on a little pink tablet from lidl. And is it just me but there seems to be that there is more and more music being made with Android apps including vocals. Syntheogen one of the unsung heroes of the Android music applications have now gotten a new update and comes with a dedicated sample editor amongst other things. When I opened it I was too lazy to check out the instructions on how to go about it and did not get the sample to sound and afterwards looked at the instructions which shows that it is a step more than just to import the sample but at the same time it does give you a much better control over your samples and get them more integrated into the workflow of Syntheogen. Here you can read how to work with the new sample editor: http://www.syntheogen.com/guide_samp_add.html#create_samp In either case the update is a nice one but the real reason that I write about this is because I do think that Syntheogen should get more attention. The workflow being different than most apps but it is made to work on a smaller screen as good as possible without skimping on features and also including features that is not in any other apps. Mostly the ease of which it is possible to work in different time signatures and getting polyrhythms going easy. So please take a closer look and if it is seems confusing read the guide properly and there soon will be a new video from the creator that will clarify the workflow even more. There is a Demo version but think about spending some coffee money and buy the application and thus support a single developer that is doing his best to rethink music apps on Android. Think that many other developers would have given up because of the lack of sales but here we have one that is going even harder into development and updating the application regularly. Syntheogen THis is one of my musical heroes since forever and on Thursday I will be extra happy sometimes around eleven o'clock at night as he will be playing live in Valencia!!! YIAHHHHHHHHHH Here he is laying down some wisdom about making it as a musician without selling out. This is a new update and it has some nice new features and fixes- new effects and a good boost to the audio quality in the higher register but what makes me happy, happy, happy with this update is that Rej the developer and Jblann from EIP studios (heavily involved in Caustic) helped out in part with the new features. Having done the website for a little bit over a year now one thing that I like is that overall the developers and people that you have contact with are great people and this is just proof of it. How many other fields of competition cooperate? The forums are also overall full of goodwill which can not be said about some of the other audio forums that I visit... So just great and hope that it keeps up like this!!! And hopefully this type of goodwill and cooperation rubs its Magick essence into the ether and into every idiot force controlling this planet hindering our development as human beings, making it very hard to bloom into the Magickal super beings that we should have been by now!!! Heres is some cold facts regarding the new update to bring me back to earth!: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Playstore links: G-stomper Beat Studio VA-Beast Peter Brinkmann is a man that works for Google and have a keen interest and have worked hard to get the visual audio programming language Pure Data (for free and very interesting) into the Android world building on something called libPD that can also be used to get Pure Data into other systems. LibPD is also usable in conjunction with the programming language Processing (The Two Big Ears developers have implemented this in their Android application Circle and written about the process). His latest news is of course Patchfield that can make audio apps interact with each other inside of Android. Sorry to say that since he released Patchfield there seems that there has not been too much interest from developers and so it is hard to get the ball rolling on Patchfield. So if you are a developer maybe take a look again at Patchfield or if you never heard about it take a look at the video that is part of the interview and go to Github and get involved!
It is open source god damn it! The interview is from September 2013 but is an interesting read for anyone even slightly interested in developing Audio applications for Android. So here is some links: The interview: http://designingsound.org/2013/09/interview-peter-brinkmann-libpd/ Patchfield information: http://google-opensource.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/patchfield-for-android.html Two Big Ears writing about their work with LibPD / Processing and making their app Circle: http://twobigears.com/labs/configuring-eclipse-to-work-with-processinglibpd-in-android/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-Zuc83-IWIhttp://felakuti.bandcamp.com/

It comes with three Synthesizers and one Drum track with the possibility to sequence and comes with some effects plus the possibility to record changes on the fly. It is the same amount tracks, sound modules and being 303'ish in the sounds it creates it could be compared to Mikrosonics RD4. The biggest difference is that RD4 is much easier to use as a Groovebox ( if not the easiest to use Groovebox ) and RD4 comes with more effects, more possibilites and full midi integration but... Have not used PhoenixStudio much but my impression is it seems to have much clearer and better sound, making it interesting for people that would like something similar to RD4 but are more interested in the sound and less in the Groovebox aspect. One thing that will hit you is the busy interface which has an explanation in that this application is maybe the oldest app you can get for Android! Yes it was developed for PocketPC in 2001 so it was made for that format and for use with a Stylus so it was not made with a smartphone in mind. He is recommending to use a bigger screen like at least a Galaxy note or over but for me it works good on a 4.0 inch screen but as said above not a good idea or not the easiest app for live Groovebox action. In either case there is a full demo to use with only saving being disabled so you can test it and see if it is too fiddly for the device that you use. Here is two of the demo songs that the applications comes with the problem that the audio files that I can upload play Wav files very badly sometimes and the latest mp3 converter that I tried does a bad job so if it is not playing the audio files properly download the demo version of the app and listen to the examples there, plus that it comes with more examples. PhoenixStudio As any regular reader of this website knows by now is that I am a big fan of the documentary Europe in 8 Bits and was extra happy to see the director hobnobbing with people like Andy Garcia on the red carpet of Miami Film Festival. See him talk about the documentary at the 2.53 mark. Then go and stream the documentary for a low sum of money at Vimeo. Said it before it is an excellent documentary and you will be inspired whatever music you are into. The only danger is that there will be chiptune sounds creeping into your music productions afterwards! To stream the film from Vimeo:
http://vimeo.com/ondemand/europein8bits The website that is very nice and have a nice presentation of a lot of Chiptune musicians: http://europein8bits.com/ It has come to my attention that SunVox has a severe limitation!
IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO USE MORE THAN 255 MODULES IN A SONG!!! This is a deal breaker for me! I need at least a minimum of around two thousand modules to make some decent music! I am now going to Russia and will protest outside of Mr Nightradios house until he changes this. What the fuck I paid a humungous sum of money for his app just to find out that 255 modules is it! I mean I need at least 200 distortion modules chained to a Synthesizer module to make the sound just right! Anyone that cares to join me for the protest in Russia? RD4 being one of the few applications that have full midi control it is nice to see someone using the midi keyboard controlling some different parameters of RD4. Playstore link:
Mikrosonic RD4 Here is already made instruments that got made for FL Studio Mobile ( and Caustic as it can import FL Studio Mobile Instruments ). In the video you can hear the instruments but you would have to go to the Youtube video site to get to the download links that are downloadable through mediafire. The video is from 2012 but the instruments are still downloadable as I just downloaded one for testing. Slightly late reporting but... Wanted to share that these two dedicated Caustic users landed a spot on this compilation album... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ released 24 February 2014 This compilation was brought to you by The E-Con Facebook Group, Dhatūrā Records, The Wetlands and Montfort Music & Promotions. released 24 February 2014 Produced by Troy Masters, David Furodet & James Cain. Always amazed seeing the videos of the guy working on a phone not a tablet and making something like this with the applications Flipaclip and Sketchbook mobile without some fancy stylus but with fingers. Sorry to say that he wanted to do the music with someone using Android music apps but in the end that did not happen as the composer made the music first on a computer and later was going to do it in Android but think that he was not used to make music with any of the Android applications that exists and being a form of orchestral music that is not being as easy to do with Android apps I guess it was too much for the composer. Even though there is people doing classical / orchestral music and doing a great work hopefully there is a possibility that the next project will be fully Android.
