Master the Bass - A well done small Bass application

8/31/2013

Picture
It can not do too much but it sounds good and is for free without publicity.
Comes with four waveforms- Sine, Two different square waves and one saw wave.
You can control the octaves and pitch with the bottom controllers-
Which are easier to reach if you hold the device upside down at least if you are using a phone ( and you are playing at the same time ).
Then you have access to the four corners around the speaker that you can program with different effects.
The application is responsive so it is easy to test and play different things out.
When it got tested was thinking that it is good for direct recording on top of another recording to get the groove right and that is exactly what they are doing in the demonstration video.
Yes this will be used sooner or later.

Picture
This is the explanation by Andreas the developer on what is going on in this example:

1st Part uses a 24dB LP Filter with an LFO and Envelope Follower applied. The Envelope gets controlled by a secondary Kick Drum through the side chain input.

2nd Part uses a 24dB HP Filter with an LFO and Envelope Follower applied. The Envelope gets controlled by a secondary Kick Drum through the side chain input.

3rd Part uses a Compressor/Limiter, which gets controlled by a secondary Kick Drum through the side chain input.

All 3 parts have a Phaser + an X-Delay in chain behind the main Effect. The sum goes through a Stereo Enhancer.

Kiarchive a great big sample library for SunVox

This is a compilation of sample instruments in a format that is only applicable to some Tracker software amongst others SunVox. It is huge and you could do music with just these sample instruments and SunVox for the rest of your life. It comes with variety of almost any instrument you can think of and also a hefty amount of synthesizers. It is kind of obligatory to download these if you are using SunVox!
Remember that you can download SunVox for free for PC/MAC/LINUX so if you do not have SunVox but want to check out what this pack contains it is possible to do so without having to buy SunVox.
Think that this pack has been out there for so many years now so no one really knows who compiled it or where everything comes from so if by some reason these are copyrighted please contact me and I will let this post disappear into the starry black sky night of forever.
Can only upload up to 250 mb files so will leave you with the Torrent file to use with your Torrent program of choice. The file unzipped is around 600 mb and unzipped it is around 900 mb... You will not regret it!

Not a musical application-
But you would sooner or later have to do some videos to go with all the music you are producing and here is one to help you get that nostalgic feeling and in my eyes actually doing a good work of it!
Had this app for some days now and it has impressed me and it does help that I used to do short films using a super 8 camera so when something comes along and actually can look like the real thing it puts a smile on mha face.
It has some presets that are pretty good emulating the 1920 up to 1970's and then you can go in and fuck around with the settings to your hearts content to get that low budget feel just like you like it.
Just look at these two videos-
the first one being made by me of my daughter on a carousel using the 1950`s setting.
The second one using the promotional video of the application.
Yes instant music video without effort!

Guitar to piano / Piano to guitar converter.

Sometimes small applications like this just makes life so much easier.
If you just need to translate your latest guitar riff into a piano sequencer and if you are like me that never really learned where all the notes are placed on the guitar neck this application makes it easy to convert the right notes to the keyboard. Guess that would be valid for any Piano player wanting to learn guitar too.
It is for free and the developer also makes another free application to help with scales and chords and if you have both applications installed they play nicely with each other.

Caustic 3.0 out of Alpha into BETA!!!

Yes it is going faster than was expected or is it just that time flies?
So now Caustic is leaving the more buggy ALPHA behind to enter into the hunt for smaller bugs. Also meaning that in a not too distant future the most exciting news in the Android music world for this year is at hand with the release of caustic 3.0.
Yes, have been holding off with getting deeper into the new Caustic because of laziness regarding fighting the bugs that comes with a ALPHA version and have been observing from the sidelines but now when the biggest fight is done  will be the perfect coward and slip into the more stable BETA version and get my hands dirty.
So if you thought that there was a lot of Caustic posted already... trust me there will be more.

To start to use the BETA version you have to sign up to the forum:

http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/

and then go here:

http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/node/2022

It is also a good idea to buy the application beforehand (if you haven't) as the BETA will act as a demo version of Caustic.
Plus that it will cost more after the official 3.0 version comes so you can save some money for that new "fill in the blank" you want to buy!

mixtikl - an eternal album  By Dave Stafford

8/24/2013

Picture
So this album is made entirely in Mixtikl an application that is high up on my list to try but just have not found time for it yet and will wait until some more convenient time as it seems deep and interesting.
Here follows the text that accompanies the album on the Bandcamp site:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SSDL1746 music for apps: mixtikl - an eternal album

release date: 20130417 label: pureambient

last updated: 20130818 current count of tracks: 12

this is the fourth of many dave stafford "eternal albums" to come - albums that have no finite number of tracks or end date. as time goes on, I will add more and more tracks (which will be at a special low price) with no limit on the number of tracks or the amount of time that passes.

in this day and age, the "album" concept seems, perhaps, a little bit outmoded, and while I will still create traditional albums and also, offer my extensive back catalogue in traditional album form, I feel the time has come for something a little more...flexible.

mixtikl is my other favourite generative music tool, and I absolutely love creating music with it. it's well suited for ambient, as the tracks here demonstrate, but it's also capable of creating much more active music, including music with drums and percussion.

the design of mixtikl is excellent, it's complex, but you can still create tracks fairly quickly without having to fully understand what you are doing (in fact, that may be preferable!) - or, you can go as deep as you want to, adding different effects to each sound source, plus global effects, and the mixing / layering / sound design possibilities of mixtikl are nearly endless - the mass of high quality samples provided mean that you can reconfigure the sounds into an almost infinite number of configurations - the ultimate in generative music flexibility - but, with consistently beautiful results.

I should note, for fans of my ambient music – music made with this application can be ambient, but many of the pieces may also be quite active; therefore, not like my usual ambient work – I will mark each track as ambient or active where possible, so: this album will contain a mixture of ambient and active tracks.

I've been playing the piano since I was very young, and synths since I first had them available, and having applications like this one (and many others to come) to work with, is a great opportunity for me to play some different kinds of music that are synth or sequenced-based, or in this case, generative - rather than guitar / guitar synth, energy bow or loop based.

so sit back, and enjoy the ride, the joy of discovering the brilliance of the mixtikl application and the unique music that can be made with it - from now until bandcamp is no more...

dave stafford: mixtikl application

created on a tired old ipad 2, beginning december, 2012; continuing until bandcamp no longer exists.

all tracks composed, performed, recorded, produced, engineered and mixed by dave stafford for pureambient records.

all instruments and sounds by dave stafford.

technical note: these are the unaltered original master recordings, newly re-mastered during summer, 2013. these new stereo masters were transferred with no alterations, and no effects or reverb being added to the tracks; in other words, no changes whatsoever to the natural sound of the samples, and the compositions they were used in, were made.

approximately four seconds of silence has been added to the end of each recording, to allow for any running order that you, the customer, desires (since this is a completely user-configurable album); this added silence in no way affects the quality of the tunes.

it's also advised that this music be listened to through headphones to experience the full stereo effect - we feel that the tracks are best experienced via headphones; in stereo - if this isn't possible, then the best available stereo speakers will have to suffice.

finally - thank you for listening!

G-Stomper with as always some useful Updates

Now with side chain support.
Which makes me beg you.
Please go easy with the side chaining if you are using it as an effect...
use it sparingly or to enhance your track gently.
It drives me personally crazy when it is going all over tracks and in heavy handed ways.
This is of course in my not so humble opinion.
But apart from that it can be really useful and to have it builtin is perfect.

Here follows the whole description of the update by Andreas the developer -
plus a small explanation of sidechaining if you are new to the concept:

Side chain support for compressor, limiter + filter envelopes
(long press on efx send to switch between input 1+2)
Export/Bounce Sample in track menu
Export/Bounce complete Track in track menu
EFX send controls on mixer channels
Sample selector folder list shows the path now
Improved ListView Performance
Multiple BugFixes in the Sample and Export handling, no more glitches when exporting loops
Minor BugFixes in the audio core + UI
Updated PDF UserManual at
http://www.planet-h.com/gstomper/

The following Effect types support Side Chaining over a second input:

Compressor/Limiter
Compressor (simple)
Limiter (simple)
7 Resonant Filter types (env follower)

By default, when you use the EFX send button to pass a track signal to an Effect, it uses input 1.
To send a signal to the input 2, long click the EFX send button on the Main Screen.
The same applies to the FX:- buttons on the Mixer Channels.

Side Chaining example with the Compressor/Limiter:

Without side chaining, the compressor effect does reduce the volume of the input signal depending on the input level. As louder the input signal is as more the reduction. Send a kick drum (on step 1,5,9,13 typical straight beat) to the compressor (normal, no side chain). Then send a long synthesizer sound to the compressor as well. Adjust the kick drum so that it's louder than the synthesizer signal. With a bit of adjusting on the compressor (on EFX edit Screen), you'll here the typical ducking effect, known from many music productions. Technically: The volume is reduced each time the kick drum starts to play, and as soon as the kick drum is over, the volume gets louder again (of course depending on the settings of the compressor: attack, release, ratio, threshold).

So this is sounding nice, but what if you want the same effect on the synthesizer (the ducking on step 1,5,9,13), but you don't want to hear the kick drum which is controlling the Effect? That is the primary purpose of side chaining. Now long press the EFX send on the kick drum track to send it, still to the compressor, but to input 2 instead of 1. Now you don't hear the kick drum anymore. But it still controls the ducking effect.

This is what Compressor side chaining does. Letting a second signal (which is not on the main mix) control the compressor level.

The same applies to the Resonant Filters. The only difference is that the side chain signal (on input 2) controls the envelope follower instead of the Compressor level.

Note: Side Chaining is only supported on the main EFX chain, NOT in the master section.

Export/Bounce Sample:

To use the sample bounce feature, long click on the desired Tx button and choose 'Export/Bounce Sample'.
This will export the Sample (not the sequence) of the current track including all track parameters: pan, vol, start, len, pitch, track filter params, env destination, env type, reverse, normalize.
The regular EFX chain is NOT included.

During the bounce process you can choose if you want the bounced sample to be loaded automatically after the export is finished.

Export/Bounce complete Track:

To use the track bounce feature, long click on the desired Tx button and choose 'Export/Bounce complete Track'.
This will export the complete Track including everything params, sequence and EFX as an audio loop.
The loop will replace the track sequence and gets loaded automatically at the end of the bounce process.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here comes a piece of music using the new sidechain function-
And as a bonus-

Using Audio Evolution with USB Audio Recorder PRO

8/22/2013

Picture
Have been on a week of vacation with some friends and our respective families and we took some hours out of our busy schedules to test out this setup.
So what have been used is the two applications Audio Evolution and the USB Audio Recorder OTG USB Cable and one USB Soundcard ( M-Audio Fast Tracker 2 ).
There is some faults of mine regarding the sound-
The guitar got recorded with a direct line and the trombone and ukelele was recorded with a Shure SM 48 a Dynamic microphone. ( The telephone being used was a Samsung Galaxy S3 ).
So directly there is a disparity in the recording as the guitar have no natural ambience in its sound as do the other two instruments also to record natural instruments with a dynamic microphone is in general a bad idea. ( but you use what you have, right? ).
The only production on the recording was the Audio Evolutions built in effects-
Which was some reverb on the guitar and some compression and a little bit more reverb on the master track to make the things gel together a little bit.
So here is the recording.
So my impression have been mixed about this. There was some problems that was annoying.
Recorded the guitar without no problems but when it was time to record the ukelele it got buggy and did not want to record so in the end had to mixdown the guitar to a wav file and start a new project in the Audio Evolution app and then it was not any problems with the recording but got some other problems like it seemed that there was an auto gain feature being activated even though it was not supposed to be and could not get any control over the input volume ( which I had recording the guitar ).
So what happened was that the trombone got distorted and being on some kind buggy auto gain it did not matter how far the microphone got placed except weirder sound because of the room ambience...
It also crashed a couple of times.
Yes it did feel unstable.
But...
To be honest the Audio Recorder PRO is still in BETA and what the developer have accomplished even with these problems are truly remarkable as with some patience and a better microphone you have a very portable studio as the USB Sound Card uses the battery of your device and this without latency and depending on SoundCard up to 24 Bit sound with direct monitoring of your audio signal.
I can not say yet and will have to record some more but as I have recorded my guitar many times into the same Sound card into the P.C and it does sound the same to me.
So if you have a USB Sound Card and a OTG USB cable and a telephone that can handle it.
It is the only way you are going to be able to get a professional recording made with your Android Device.
And if you are not interested in multi track recordings you can use just the USB Audio Recorder PRO for one track recordings.

So To finish would say that the possibilities this offers is exciting but would not count on it in a critical situation yet.
But for recording in the park or not wanting to bring  a computer for recording or as a backup if your computer breaks down as at least you have the possibilities to continue recording with the same audio quality as your USB Sound Card would allow.

Update-
Spoke to the developer and he said that it sounded strange regarding the auto gain and that he had ran into the same problem also with a Samsung Galaxy S3 and that it is probably the cable that got loose and that things got recorded straight in with the microphone of the phone.
Well that would make sense and had been thinking that it could have been a reason.
Especially because of how much more sensitive the microphone seemed to have gotten when the recording got made with the trombone and not with the Ukulele...
Well in future update there will be a warning built in if the USB cable gets detached.

Do you play any instruments?

--Not really but I like to sing.

What musicians or bands have inspired you in your music making?

-- Well besides my dad, the Caustic Warriors who make really cool music.

How long have you been using Caustic?

-- about a year now....

In Caustic 2 what is your favorite module and why?

-- I like the PCMSynth because you can have lots of cool sounds, like flutes and drums and other stuff.

Was Caustic hard to learn?

-- Ummm haha not really.

What was the hardest part to understand?

-- probably making my patterns sound right.

What is your first impressions of Caustic 3 Alpha?

-- Wow! It's really amazing! The new machines! especially Pad Synth, I can make my sound just right very quickly to then make a pattern for my song!

What was your biggest surprise?

-- Everything looks sooo different, but in a great way, and all the new synth machines were great too!

Is there anything that you miss in the new version?

-- well no! Hello! It's new! It's just more of everything!

To work with music is that something that you want to do when you are older?

-- Well I like to do art and things, I like to draw and write stories, and yes also like to make music, but I'm still learning.

What do you feel is missing from your musical knowledge that you would want to study more?

-- Music theory which I really haven't learned much yet, but I really want to.

If there are any tips for someone that just is starting with making music, what would that be?

-- Take your time and learn.

As a final note, of the music that you produced is there one specific piece of music
that you want to share with the readers of Musical Android?

-- Oh yeah! Drum Break!

So am happy to have interviewed the only eight year old doing serious music using Caustic for Android!

n-Track Studio BETA testing available for Android version

8/20/2013

Picture
n-Track Studio is a DAW that have been around for many years now
and comes with the usual features for a DAW.
Now they are releasing a version for Android which will if understood correctly have integration with the Windows / MAC / iOS versions. Meaning that you can do multi track recording, use effects and mix it etc and continue the work in the full blown DAW.
For a DAW it is decently priced and could be interesting if you are looking into buying a DAW.

In either case if you are interested in BETA testing the Android version for free go here:
