Just discovered this yesterday and just opened it quickly one time.
It looks nice and surely interesting to check out for anyone into chiptune music making.
It is in a tracker sequencer stylelee though, so be aware if being scared of heights and only used to horizontal piano rolls!

Ahhh...
It is also for freeee and without anal probing also known as advertisement!

Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.twobit.fakesid

There is no information given except this:
Fake SID is a chiptune tracker that let's you create Commodore 64 music.
But it does not seem too hard to figure out with an hour or two of exploration.

Pocket Composer - Modular

It´s Modular!

Always get excited when things are modular.

This is a new concept as it does not use a tradtional sequencer but reads the modules loaded with a sample/synthesizer in the order they are in the chain.
So think that it can lead to happy accidents and to think a little bit more non-linear.
It is as is a little bit basic with not too much choice in modules but it looks like it can be expanded in all kinds of directions depending on the will of the creator.

It also records sound, making it a fun thing to use for enviromental sound collages.

It is for free and does not come with adverts.

Cool with a small new modular addition to the Android universe and if expanded futurewise can be something mighty interesting...

Google Play:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jf.pocketcomposer

This music composition app lets you record sounds anytime and anywhere with your phone. You can arrange them in a graph-based scoring layout to create intriguing compositions.

Features:

- 16 track polyphony
- record sounds
- import .wav from SD-card
- synthesizer module
- audio fx: ringmodulator, delay, filters

Drum Pad Beats - Deep Caustic Engine Based Groove Pads

This is made by a developer that have made some other apps that is based on using the Caustic engine. He is also the web director of the Cautic website, singlecellsoftware.com.

This app seems to me to be the most advanced one yet and if not paying attention it may seem simplistic but seeing the videos it shows to have a lot of possibilities that are not obvious and still being an easy app to use. (Having not used it though, it is still not clear to me how the synthesizer parts work).
Can imagine that this would be a very good app for some people.
Also as it is based on the Caustic engine it will be very stable and probably work very good on lower spec devices. Always surprised how good Caustic works on my five year old devices that was not that good to begin with!

Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teotigraphix.drumpadbeats

Drum Pad Beats is a fun beat/composer - scene/remixer to capture those ideas when that flash of inspiration hits while away from the studio.

Drum Pad Beats is aimed at users that want to create rhythms and melodies using pads and step sequencers. With the added ability to export their creations to wav, ogg or midi loops (zip, pcmsynth for Caustic), user ideas can be taken farther in mobile or desktop Digital Audio Workstations.

Great for sharing beats/tracks as dpb files and remixing another artist's track, the track could then be remixed again adding even more flavor. Drum Pad Beat's project file contains everything another user needs to take that idea even farther.

Picture
This app was pretty nice some years ago specially as there was not too many good apps competing but there was no saving so it was a little bit sad as personally did not feel much interest in spending time to have the work lost when closing the app...
Well I missed that there is now a Pro version that came out some months ago. with saving.
So it is nice for anyone that likes a nice beat box that is simple to work with and it does only cost two monies!
The free version is also still available to test...

Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vtrsoftware.pureSynthPro

Vintage additive music synthesizer

pureSynth consists in four additive synthesizers plus one beat generator controlled by a five grid sequencers.

Synthesizers:

It's possible to save parameters of each synthetiser and load them individualy.

There is a view to control all parameters of all synthetisers and beatbox easily.

Each synthesizer has six oscillators to generate the fundamental note plus five harmonics: second, third, fifth, seventh and ninth. The oscillators can generating a sine wave, triangular wave, square wave and sawtooth wave.

In order to control the notes pureSynth has an envelope controller which controls the attack time, decay time, sustain time, release time and sustain level.

It's posible to clear all marked notes pressing reset button(long click).

The note range accessible from the pad is controllable dragging a finger over it vertically. From midi note 12 to 84 is possible (7 octaves).

One LFO modulator is included in each synthesizer, it modulates the signal from 0 Hz to 20 Hz.

There are two sound effects possible: distortion and delay.

BeatBox:

Reproduces up to 12 sample beats and the volume of those beats can be controlled by separate. Those beats are: bell, block, clap, cymbal, hat, 3 difference kicks, misc, shaker and snare.

Sequencers:

There is a view to visualize all sequences of all sequencers where you can activate/deactive each sequence by separate.

Sequencers go up until 16 sequences of 16 steps.

The main menu includes a three ways equalizer, BPM controller(from 25bpm to 200bpm), ON/OFF button and controls to record the audio output(all files are stored in pureSynth folder in sd card) which you can share with your contacts.

Humbeatz – Hum your notes unto four tracks / Mini Review

5/12/2018

Picture

Have had fascination over the idea to create music from just vocals and have tried sometimes using Melodyne. For me it has not been easy as the things that come up using my head instead of an instrument or sequencer have been far less interesting.

In the end maybe having an instrument at hand to just pick out the notes is easier.
Having said that and maybe leaving the impression of negativity over such an app like this…
I must say that I like it.

First on my mind was will it work, as there are other apps that have been trying their hands on note recognition but failed miserable. As anyone that tried these apps will tell you, that it is hard to use a garbled mess of random midi notes for anything.

Second was, will the app be used and not just occupying real estate on the phone/tablet?
Feel that yes there is definitively use for it. Maybe for me the first use is to quickly take out music that I am listening to without using an instrument and having the midi notes available for later.  Or use the bassline off a song as a starting point etc.

And yes it actually works! It does find the hummed notes with accuracy and there is some heavy algorithms going on behind the scene as it takes some times to transform the audio into midi, but it works.
There is also the problem of latency that they solved by letting the app listen to the metronome and audio recordings and get adjusted.
I mention these concerns as they are the most important to know if anyone is interested in getting the app.

There is some setting up and trial and error but not too much and my biggest critique is that it only records two bars for each track but understandably it would be too heavy processing and waiting time otherwise. And for doing a bassline/melody/beat it works out fine.

Hopefully they maybe add a sequencer window that can be used for importing the midi and as such make longer tracks possible piece by piece.

Also feel that they should have a free version with maybe just one track and no saving or similar as even if it is not costing a fortune it is good to test it first just to know how well it performs on whatever device. But there is always possible to test it anyway and return it after an hour or two so it is not a big thing.

So it will be fun to see if I end up using this app or not but in either case I am happy that it is installed and having the possibilities that it offers.

P.s the sounds are General Midi but midi can be exported to use in other apps/programs.

Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.humbeatz.humbeatz

Fang  Synth – An expressive Synth and Sequencer.

Picture

The developer has made one unique drum machine called Dragon and one Drone synthesizer called Wiisp. This is the latest app and is focused on using the motions sensors in a device for controlling a shitload of parameters.
Each parameter can be controlled by desired amount back n forth and sideways.

It really is worth spending some time with it to get out as much as possible from it.
Think this will appeal to people that are not afraid to take some time to find the sweet spots and some will be confused and run for shelter in more conventional music apps.

Yapps just like his other apps the graphics are bare bones which will scare off some but personally I find appealing, as it fits with the rawness that can be made sound wise.

Google Play:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thiiird.fang

Fang is a synth app based on motion modulated control through accelerometer information. Each parameter can be linked to different directions of motion. Contains presets, WAV recording, a stepped arpeggiator with diatonic scale locking, a multi-pattern sequencer, wave shaping oscillators, resonant filter with envelope and pitch following, and an effects rig (including formant (vowel) filter, pitched delay, reverb, down-sample, bit reduction.) Capable of strange sonic textures, complex evolving arpeggios, or classic sequenced synth sounds.

Notes are generated with a sequencer and keyboard. The sequencer works by moving a step at the rate specified. There are four patterns that can be played and edited independently.

The keyboard has a set of notes that can be played or buttons which hold notes. Held notes can be cut off by sequencer notes and play notes of the same pitch.
The arpeggiator receives notes from the sequencer and keyboard. Its rate is controlled by both synced time and ms that are added together. It has variable steps, step transpose and gate. The steps and timing can be reset periodically with the optional arp reset. There is optional diatonic scale locking as well, allowing you to select a root note and scale from major, dorian, phyrygian, lydian, mixolydian, minor, and locrian.

The synth's sounds are generated with five voices, each with two oscillators that modulate between triangle and saw. Modulation is effected by an envelope. There is a pitch envelope that effects both oscillators. The oscillators are capable of fm (osc B modifying osc A.) Both oscillators can have their signals sent to the filter or directly to the amp envelope. A white noise signal can also be added to the filter or directly to the amp envelope.

The filter is a 4 pole resonant band-pass whose frequency can follow the pitch. It is also effected by its own ADSR envelope. The filtered and unfiltered signal is sent to a per voice down sample and per voice delay under synth menu. All voices are sent to an effect rig with a formant (vowel) filter, pitched delay, reverb, and bit reduction. Presets and WAV files are stored at /device root/fang/.

Four sub parameters for each parameter to adjust left, right, back, and forward accelerometer input
Save and load presets
Export audio as WAV (exported to /device root/fang/)

4 pattern 8 step sequencer with adjustable rate
Stepped arpeggiator with sync and ms rate control
Diatonic scale lock

5 voice polyphony
Pitch envelope
2 oscillators wave shape between triangle and saw by slider and by an envelope
Oscillator B to A frequency modulation (fm)
White noise generator
Per voice delay
Per voice down-sample effect

4 pole resonant band-pass filter with frequency control by slider, pitch, and ADSR envelope
Amplitude controlled by ADSR envelope, number box, and pitch

Reverb
Formant (vowel) filter
Delay with re-pitched feedback
Bit reduction

File permission is for presets and WAV recording. Would love to hear anything made with Fang, email is posted.

Noise Machine- Update plus mini review

4/24/2018

Picture
The new update of Noise Machine is not the biggest but an interesting one.

To pay for the premium version you do to get rid of the ever so annoying publicity that are a regular feature of many free apps but it also gives access to a sequencer.

If this would have been a more standard music app it would not have been too exciting, but Noise machine being focused on getting synthesized noise out of it. Being able to set different types of noisy oscillators, Lfo (different types) modulation, filter, delay and distorted ring modulation it can bring forth a whole lot of different flavors of noise.

This may not be obvious at first glance as the interface appears simple but rewards tweaking, with all kinds of goodness for musicians that are willing to step out of the comfort zone of commonly accepted norms.

Ahh so back to the sequencer… It is a simple sequencer but very useful as each of the sixteen steps can be programmed with one setting of noise. Making it possible to build rhythms of noise that would be hard to achieve without much more work in other ways.
There is also the added bonus of randomization of each step for the lazy ones. Giving way to unexpected surprises of course.

There is griones, always griones knocking at the door of perfection!

The most obvious one being that there is no way to save the sequenced pattern steps. So once the app is turned off… But it comes with internal recording for further chopping in an audio editor or for importing into other apps/programs.

Another thing that could be nice is to be able to see what Bpm the sequencer is set to.
So that is something that has to be set by ear or retro fitted later into wherever the recordings go later, if wanting to use it within music set to a specific beat.

Would love to see this concept taken farther with more tracks, effects etc as it is unique to be able to noise things up on an even deeper level!
Maybe the closest to (but not limited to noise generation) that is Grainstorm which I also recommend to check out. Grainstorm can also load sounds so it is a nice companion to Noise machine…

Beat Snap from Mixvibes - Another loop based paint by the numbers music "making" app...

4/12/2018

Picture
Have nothing against Mixvibes that released the application as they are making quality apps but...
Have never liked the loop based music making that is pervading electronic music making.
Buy some packs and sound like this, just put one loop together with some other loops in the style of... Ahh yes forgot the creative part... here we have put some fx to create originality...
Ohhh listen as the filter sweeps on a loop or two and as a delay trail down another sound and there it is, another song made that brings absolutely nothing to the table except an empty ego boost!

Maybe it is on my mind lately as my brother just started making music with such an app.
He is super excited showing me the music he is "making" and it sounds well produced but it brings absolutely no excitment or anything that resembles originality in any way form or shape.
The worst thing is that he is a pretty decent guitar player and knows some music theory etc.

As popular music gets more and more mediocre for each passing year (this have been studied and proven analyzing popular music over the last fifty years) these types of apps just makes people create even more mediocracy to torture friends and family with!

Create any music in any style is the idea as he tortured me with his latest opus, explaining that he wanted to see if he could make a latin influenced track. Trying to be encouraging and awake all I can say is that the sound is good but maybe you could try to make your own melody and chord progressions. Knowing that he can do it but alás laziness and instant gratification is the name of the game.

Something that is obvious is the contradiction that have arisen over the digital era of music making is that the more freedom and the easier it is to make music we definitvely is not gunning for new heights but have settled for excruciatingly bland music and each year more young ears thinks that it is normal and scoff at music that is alive and have some soul!

P.s
Have nothing against music using a loop or two and there is a deep love and respect for Hip hop/rap (being a constant in my life) which is something different.
The reaction to this way of music making is the pre-packaging and killing of creativity.
Also totally aware that it is not wrong that people enjoy themselves thinking that they are doing something creative and the ego feelgood that comes as a reward,
but do believe that it is creating an environment for the future where that is more important than actually taking the human spirit to new levels of real beauty and broadening of our soul!

Riffshare - Simple but potent multi track composing

10/7/2017

This developer have been around for a long time and the main idea of his earlier work has been the same as this latest one. Which is to make a multi track sequencer without much bells and whistles but fast to work with and still get good results.

I get the feeling too that it is meant to be for practicing which it would be good for. Just to lay some drums and bass for example and then play guitar to it etc.

One thing that is not seen in other apps on Android is the sequencer (it is possible to do the same things in most DAW's if one feels so inclined). There is no stepping in and out of different tracks, everything is on track and the instruments can be chosen from the sidebar.
So it is very simple to differentiate the different tracks and instruments as they are colour coded. This is great as you can see what any given track is up to while composing.

It is for free, no publicity and open source!

It is not so often lately that there is a new app and concept making an appearance. This looks like one. Have not tried it and am slightly skeptic as it seems more focused on the visual side of things but I could be wrong and it would have been good if they had a demo to try before as it is kind of expensive compared to other android apps.
But they do state that there will be a reduced free version soon.

Google Play:

Mazetools Soniface

EXPLORATION & EXPRESSION
With Mazetools: Soniface you can create various styles of electronic music. Everything based on common aspects of notation and music production. The in-app manual guides you towards a visual music experience.

HOW THE GRID WORKS?
The framework of action is a grid. Each line represents a single note. Shining lines are showing playing tones.

X-Y CONTROLLERS & MULTI-TOUCH
Use multi-touch gestures for altering sound effects or explore the circular editing interface.

DYNAMIC SOUND MODULATION
Merge sounds and geometric shapes! Draw sound waves and automation curves freely with your finger to modify the sound effects.

GROOVE SEQUENCER
Just tap into the circle to set bass drum, snare and hi-hat steps. Easily adjust envelopes and pitch levels.

RHYTHMICAL MELODIES
Let the grid play a sequence of notes automatically using the arpeggiator interface.

LIVE MODE & SPECIAL VISUALS
Use different patterns to create song variations. Add a special kaleidoscope visual to a pattern as a highlight.

Discovered this about a week ago and find it interesting as I am a guitar player and makes composing different than using a piano roll. It has a lot of things going for it which makes it look a little bit cluttered but personally I like that almost all functions are on one page and available.
It is also scalable so that makes everything even easier.
There is a free version for PC and a unpaid version that only have midi import/export disabled but you can still save songs.

To downoad the free PC version:
http://laggyluk.com/?page_id=206

Google Play info:

Tabster is lightweight and cross platform music creation tool. Note sequencer design follows the guitar tabulature tradition.
features:
-step sequencer
-sample based, configurable instruments
-configurable guitar string count and tuning
-fret/piano mode
-midi export/import (export requires purchasing full version)

there is a free full version for win OS available on my website www.laggyluk.com

Dragon - Synth Drum Machine Lo-Fi & Dirty in the Right Way

4/13/2017

Picture
Have been playing with this some days now and it is a cool thing.
It is dirty and different. It is not sample based and comes with a handfull of effects.
The layout is to scroll from the top to the bottom, starting with the bass drum and ending with the effects section.
There is not many drum machines for Android based on synthesized drums so that makes this interesting but what makes it even more interesting is that there is no drum machine that sounds like it either.

Anyone interested in aggressive noisy sounds or chiptune should definitevely check this out.
Do think that it is also good to have anyway as it fun to tweak and just being different makes it an added possibility that is hard to get to with other apps.
There is a demo that is useful if you want to sit and record into a DAW for example the full version comes with preset saving and soon to come audio recording.

It is made using Pure Data and ported to Android using LibGDX which is the same as the developer working on Pure Data Party apps. It seems to be shortest way for someone that wants to make quality apps but do not have years to spend how to code properly...

The developer is also active musically and you can hear his music here:

Google Play:

Dragon - Synth Drum Machine

Dragon is a drum machine built to quickly and easily make glitch, distorted, lofi drum beats and manipulate them live. The drums are simple and flexible, capable of some classic drum machine sounds and also new weirdness. Each is synthesized in real time and sent to a multi effect rig with variable speed stutter, bit reduction, pitched feedback delay and a resonant bandpass filter. The drums are triggered by a four pattern step sequencer. Patterns can be changed individually for each drum or triggered together for quick pattern switches for all drums.

Features:
Four pattern sequencer with local and global pattern control
BPM control with nudging
Save/load presets
Three drum synths:
-Bass
-Snare
-Hi-hat
Effects rig:
-Asymmetry and tanh(x) for tape like distortion
-Pitched feedback delay
-Retrigger (aka stutter/buffer) with variable speed and reversing
-Bit reduction
-Down-sample
-Reverb
-Resonant bandpass filter

Preset management requires permission for file storage read/write (optional on Android M+)

Unpaid version disables preset saving and audio recording

Audio recording coming soon. Possible future ports to desktop and ios. Made with Pure Data and libGDX

Full parameter and effect reference:

SYNTH PARAMETERS

Rev: reverse retrigger’s playback
Speed: control the speed of the retrigger’s playback

Bit Red: Bit reducer. Mixes in a low bit signal
BP Filt: Band-pass filter. All the way left is off

Music writer - Midi sequencer/Deep compositional tool

5/12/2016

Picture
Have not delved deeper into this but it looks like it could be one of the better composition tools on Android. It is using the General Midi instruments in your device but can export the midi for later use in other apps/software. Also interesting that they forego the pianoroll and use a more up to down tracker stylelee for composing. Made for easy re-harmonising and other handy tools for faster composing. Maybe a slight learning curve as it comes with more deeper functions than other midi sequencers but should be learnt in an hour or so without too much hassle.
Comes with in-app purchase...

Google play link:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.basisfive.musicmakerstudio2

Google Play info:

Create your own music and songs and play with a multi-track MIDI sequencer.
Turn your ideas into full songs; write and modify sections, chords, notes, and drum hits, quickly and productively.
Immerse yourself in your music, make a song and play with more than one hundred instruments.
It combines several tools to let you quickly shape your songs while exploring different ideas.
For example you can try out different harmonies of a song section: write it once and hear how it sounds when played in different chord progressions, with the one-of-its kind feature of automatic harmonic transposition.
It includes a step sequencer for drum hits, a piano roll editor for detailed note editing, a rhythm editor to try out different rhythm alternatives. Plus, organize your song into sections and modify and repeat them at will. You will be amazed how fast, easy and fun writing music can be with this app.
The sounds are produced by the MIDI synthesizer of your device, so you can choose among all the 128 instruments specified by the General MIDI standard, which include many types of guitars, basses, pianos, brasses, strings, pads, synthesizers, percussion, woods and some effects.
FEATURES
- Multi-track sequencer;
- 6 different editors;
- 128 instruments;
- Mixer to program each track's instrument and volume, and to mute/solo the tracks;
- Automatic Harmonic Transposition: lets you apply different chord progressions to the music you are writing, so as to choose whatever sounds best;
- Metronome;
- Playing range selection;
- Save and reuse groups of bars and chord progressions in other songs and/or tracks;
- Quickly copy and modify a section or an entire song;
- Automatic saving at each modification of your composition;
- Export to MIDI format: you can import the .mid file generated to your preferred DAW and take it to the next level, with further sound processing;
- Export all your songs, groups of bars, and chord progressions into the external memory of your device, so you can import all your library to another device, or make a backup copy of your work;
- Import from the external memory (what you have previously exported);
- In-depth integrated user manual, with everything explained.

MUSIC EDITORS
- Song Section Editor: to organize the sections (verses, choruses, etc.);
- Chords Editor: to write chord progressions;
- Tracks Editor: to organize the bars of the multi-track sequencer;
- Notes Editor: to write notes into the tracks;
- Drums Editor: step sequencer for percussive sounds;
- Rhythm Editor: to write chords based on rhythm;

WHAT THIS APP IS:
- Simply put: it's a tool to write and make music (your own music!) and we think it's quite good at it!
- It assists your music-writing creative process, from initial ideas to complete songs;
- You can use it for any type of music compositions, and it's particularly suited to songs;
- You can use it alone, or in combination with a DAW: first write a multi-track MIDI file, then import it in your DAW to apply audio effects and do more elaborate mixing;
- The benefits of using this app relative to another music editor is that it does things from the music composer point of view, rather than the sound/mixing engineer;

WHAT THIS APP IS NOT:
- It's not a tool to automatically generate music from loops or algorithms, you are regarded as a music composer, not just a user;
- It's not a one-fit-all tool: it excels in the creative, music-writing part of your work.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS APP:
- Musicians, songwriters, composers, anyone who enjoys writing, composing and making music.

You don't need to be a professional musician to use this app, but it's better if you know at least the basics of music theory (but don't worry if you don't because this app can be an invaluable learning tool for you).
This free version is fully functional so you can make a full evaluation. Only saving and import/export are disabled.
Finally, it's an app written by musicians for musicians!
