Wanted to write about this for a long time and was thinking that I should do some recordings etc as examples but as the months has been passing and being more tempted to play with other apps that are more easy on a workflow level it has not happened and you will have to listen to the original Korg DS 10 examples instead over the internet.
So what am I talking about?
Well Korg made a synthesizer for Nintendo DS and it have quite a following, sounding very good and having two synthesizers and programmable drum machine with sequencer you can make whole tracks or at least the basics of tracks with just this.
I have used it through a Nintendo DS emulator called Drastic Ds Emulator and it works good even on my slightly crappy tablet. The problem being that the interface is slightly sluggish, the screen resolution not too good and not being made for Android the workflow have a slight learning curve. Not to high and anyone that are used to fuck around with software and have a little bit of patience will be rewarded with one of the better synths ( or even the best analog sounding ) you can get for Android. You have a lot of sound design options and even some modular routing. The drums are also tweakable.
You also have Kaoss pad / theremin style window accessible that allows you to record modulations and notes in real time which is a reason to get this on your device for a live setup recording session.
So to get this synthesizer you would need Drastic DS emulator there is other emulators for Nintendo DS but this is the one I tried and it worked good on my devices.
You should of course be totally legal and buy the cartridge and extract the Rom if you know how. You can get a legal copy secondhand for about 20 € / 30 $.
One of the confusing things when you start to use it is that you have to have to switch to the window that is possible to manipulate as you can only manipulate one of the two windows visible. To do this there is a small menu icon of two arrows. The rest is more or less easy to figure out. Must also admit that even though I have had plans to use this much more it is just a tad too cumbersome and annoying to use but also have the feeling that if you get into it it would not be a problem at all, just a matter of getting used to it.
It is recommendable to use a 7 or 10 inch tablet for it as it will make manipulation easier than on a small screen even if it is possible but probably better with a good stylus.
Hopefully there will be some music posted using this one day... But If anyone has or will install and made / make some music please share with us.
Send me the music and your thoughts at musicalandroid@yahoo.com
Here is a good overview / review of the original.
